Markets and food

Markets and food is a program of workshops on the culture of food, also known as "foodcultura", which includes rituals, ingredients, cooking utensils, recipes and ancestral knowledge; in other words, everything associated with food, from the moment of its production, or the ways of sitting at the table, to the symbolism that certain ingredients can have as a cultural tradition.

One Saturday a month we will take a tour through the markets and food of a specific place, guided by a local person from the culture to be explored. As if it was a journey, we will ramble through grandmother's recipes, home remedies, popular sayings and words associated to food, rituals and gastronomic secrets. We will also venture into the kitchen to learn about a typical local dish.

On Saturday, November 15, with our program dedicated to Mexico, we will symbolically stroll through the "tianguis" - typical street markets of the country-; we will talk about the meaning of the piñatas loaded with fruit and snacks; we will explore grandmothers' recipes for typical dishes such as mole or sweet chipotles; we will discover that many ingredients that today are in other cuisines, come from Mesoamerica; and of course, we will talk about Day of the Dead offerings as an invitation to the table. Finally, we will prepare corn tortillas and a good guacamole.

Starting in January we will delve into the roots of other cultures, their flavors, colors and aromas. Our intention is to walk through the "foodcultura" of places like Ghana, Brazil, Serbia, Italy, Tunisia, Syria, Japan and a long etcetera; without leaving aside the local gastronomic culture of Catalunya, because we want to get to know in depth  the traditions of the place where we live in, such as the calçotadas, the pa amb tomaquet or the typical vermut from Reus.

Who doesn't enjoy a good meal and even better, the "sobremesa"?

Our intergenerational workshops are open to the participation of children, youth and adults, including elderly. It is a space of coexistence and enjoyment where ages are mixed, learning from each other and seeing each other as equals by participating side by side.

Prior registration is essential, so call or write us.
